About Nigel

Nigel Bearman is founder of BearmanCPA, a public accounting firm dedicated to providing accounting services to the nonprofit sector. After 17 years in leadership roles within nonprofit organizations, Bearman founded BearmanCPA to specifically focus on the needs of nonprofits. His mission is to provide any nonprofit – regardless of its current size or financial condition – with access to the same financial techniques and best practices employed by the nation’s leading nonprofits.

Prior to founding BearmanCPA, Bearman served from 1996 to 2006 as Vice President of Finance and Controller at three nonprofits, each with unique challenges and vastly differing budgets. Most recently, he served as a member of the President’s executive leadership group at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. As Vice President of Finance & Controller, he developed the annual $100 million operating budget, created a comprehensive long-term financial planning model and played a key role in structuring four long-term debt issues. As staff liaison to the financial planning and audit committees of the board, he strengthened communications between management and the trustees.

Previously, Bearman served as Controller at the YWCA in Boston, Massachusetts and in that same capacity for the Worldwide Church of God in Pasadena, California. During his tenure at each organization, he gained a reputation for taking the mystery out of nonprofit accounting and for bringing stability and transparency to financial operations.

Bearman gained his public accounting experience at Grant Thornton, LLP – the U.S. member firm of Grant Thornton International (GTI). GTI consists of member firms in 112 countries with 50 offices in the United States. Prior to his tenure in public accounting, Bearman worked for a number of years at Texas Health Enterprises in Denton, Texas.

Bearman is a certified public accountant, licensed to practice in North Carolina, Maine and Texas. His firm, BearmanCPA, is a sole proprietorship, licensed by the North Carolina State Board of CPA Examiners. BearmanCPA is enrolled in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants peer review program and is authorized to perform audits, reviews and compilations. Bearman has a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of North Texas.

A native of Dartford, England, Bearman arrived in the U.S. in 1982, subsequently becoming a U.S. citizen. He and his wife Kellie reside in Wilmington, North Carolina.
